Klaus Iohannis: first statement after the vote

Klaus Iohannis thanked Romanians for their vote on Sunday and hailed the high turnout of the Romanians abroad while paying his respects. He condemned the irregularties in the voting process who enraged Romanians across Europe. Mr. Iohannis called on the government to dismiss those in charge of the voting process for the Romanians living abroad while also calling on Romania’s outgoing President Traian Băsescu to recall diplomats who failed to ensure a civilised voting process. In a further move, Klaus Iohannis called on Parliament for a quick vote of a law legalising electronic voting or a vote by mail. Mr. Iohannis believed that election results delivered a strong signal proving that Romanians expected him along with all the political class to ensure the deep reforms the country needed.
I call on politicians to think twice about what they have to do in the coming days. I call on Parliament to keep its promise in order to discuss and reject the draft law on amnesty and other legal pardons. I also call on Parliament to discuss and approve any proposals coming from the country’s judiciary. And speaking about the Romanians’ signal I was previously mentioned, I invite the government to come before parliament and present the draft budget on 2015. The sooner the better„, Klaus Iohannis concluded.
Klaus Iohannis is the winner of the Romanian presidential elections on Sunday. With 99 percent of the votes counted, the candidate of the centre-right Christian Liberal Alliance (ACL) won 54.50 of the votes against the 45.49 percent who went to Victor Ponta, candidate of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD), according to results issued at 11 AM by the country’s Central Electoral Bureau (BEC).

PSD Senator Dan Şova rejects a potential cabinet resignation

A high-ranking official of the governing Social Democratic Party (PSD) rejected the idea of a potential cabinet resignation on Monday. PSD Senator Dan Şova echoed a statement of PSD Executive President Liviu Dragnea who also rejected an idea previously mentioned by PSD Vice President Robert Negoiţă following the BEC annoucement concerning the defeat of PSD candidate, Prime Minister Victor Ponta.
As we respect the presidential vote, and we have President Klaus Iohannis, the cabinet is governing in compliance with a programme approved by 60 percent of the voters in December 2012 – a better score than Mr. Iohannis’. Therefore, I do not see the logic of such move in case you ask me about it. Of course, the party should consider the issue and make a decision. But I think we should keep our government until 2016„, Mr. Şova said. However, he believes that Liviu Dragnea ‘should take a step back’ as he was responsible for the failure.
