Mineriad File reopened

Romania’s Supreme Court decided to reopen a file concerning events in the capital Bucharest on June 13 – 15, 1990 following a request put forward by the country’s Prosecutor General’s Office. (Actually, the word Mineriad refers to the successive violent interventions of miners in Bucharest in January, February and June 1990, September 1991, and January-February 1999, ed. n.). Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu, former Intelligence chief Virgil Măgureanu, former Interior Minister Mihai Chiţac and others are to be questioned for their alleged involvent in the case. The Supreme Court ruling is final. Allegations include a long range of crimes including crimes against humanity.

German Foreign Minister on a visit to Romania

While in Romania for an official visit, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier met the country’s Prime Minister Victor Ponta after holding talks with President Klaus Iohannis on Monday. Talks focused mostly on future economic co-operation between the two countries as well as on security issues following recent events in EU’s eastern neighbourhood. Mr. Steinmeier is also expected to visit the Transylvanian town of Sibiu where he will attend events celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Germans’ Democratic Forum in Romania.

Voltaj to represent Romania at Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna

Romanians have selected their entry for the 2015 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest in a grand TV show in the southern Romanian town of Craiova on Saturday. The winner was „De la capăt ” („From the Beginning”), a song performed by the Voltaj group. With 12 points from the jury and another 12 from audiences, Voltaj won the contest and the group would fly the Romanian flag in the Austrian capital Vienna where it would represent Romania in the first semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest on Tuesday, May 19th.

Romanian composer Marcel Dragomir dies at 70

Romanian composer Marcel Dragomir has died at 70 on Sunday, March 8. Born on October 28, 1944 in Câmpina (actually registered on October 30), Dragomir was hugely acclaimed mostly for his songs in the ’80s and ’90s with such hits as „Un albastru infinit” („A Neverending Blue”), „Mă rog” („I Pray”), „Voi dansa cu tine” („I’ll Dance with You”), „Să te gândeşti din când în când la mine” („Think of Me from Time to Time”) all performed by Romanian pop star Angela Similea. He made his Romanian Radio debut in 1972 with „Don’t Wait”, a song performed by the late Aurelian Andreescu, another Romanian pop star of the ’80s. Other songs include hits performed by other Romanian pop stars such as Mirabela Dauer, Corina Chiriac, Mihaela Runceanu and Aura Urziceanu. Between 1984 – 1994, Marcel Dragomir worked as musical editor with the Artistic Department of the Romanian Radio.
