General Philip Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, on a visit to Bucharest

US General Philip Breedlove, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) of NATO Allied Command Operations and fervent critic of Russia’s intervention in Eastern Ukraine is on a visit to Bucharest. General Breedlove has announced today after his meeting with Romania’s Defense Minister Mircea Duşa that NATO will shortly decide whether or not Romania is going to host heavy military gear of the Alliance.
Philip Breedlove: The decision is to be made public soon but I am convinced that, when it happens, Romania will respond promptly as always  and will support prepositioning of this equipment as a trusted member of the Alliance.
General Philip Breedlove has also met earlier today with President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Victor Ponta.

Central Bank cuts monetary policy interest rate at 2 percent

Romania’s Central Bank has cut the monetary policy interest rate to a yearly 2 percent from 2.25 percent, during the board meeting today. Opinions expressed in an internal survey carried out by the Romanian Association of the Financial-Banking Analysts had already revealed that mandatory minimum reserves could be maintained constant for both national currency and foreign exchange liabilities. At the same time, this could be the last cut in monetary policy  interest rate for the current cycle as most forecasts point towards 2 percent until December 2015.

Romanian Business Leaders Summit tackles new Tax Codes

The effort to rewrite Romania’s Tax Codes was necessary, according to representatives of business environment gathered at Romanian Business Leaders summit today, who have welcomed the steps ahead marked by measures in the normative act. Fiscal relaxation stipulated by the new code, however, needs to prove sustainable and businessmen need assurance that these measures won’t be amended in a few months time. Moreover, entrepreneurs call for an even simpler fiscal legislation with more predictability. Another issue targets new requests for companies to report daily all transactions exceeding 5.000 euros which could help tax evasion, specialists say, but which also brings greater costs upon all contributors .

„Business Days” event starts off in the Western city of Timişoara

„Business Days” – one of the most important business events in Western Romania – has started today in the city of Timisoara. For two days, the reunion hosted by the Regional Business Centre will gather more than 100 top managers, communication specialists and businessmen attending dozens of workshops on team management and coordination, organizational and planning skills, business negotiation and other subjects. The themes have been chosen following a study carried out by Business Days team at the beginning of 2015 which revealed that businessmen in Western Romania focus mainly on improving corporate communication and consolidating their personal brand. 1.000 persons are expected to attend the event, according to the organizers.

Romania came first among EU member states regarding sunflower production in 2014

Last year, Romania came first among EU member states regarding sunflower production and sunflower-cultivated surfaces.According to temporary data released by the National Institute of Statistics regarding crops in 2014, Romania also came first at corn-cultivated surfaces but was second in what corn production is concerned after France. Romania came fifth in the EU at wheat production and wheat-cultivated surfaces.

Unemployment rate in Romania drops slightly against the previous year

Unemployment rate in Romania has dropped to 6.4 percent in February 2015, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics. The number of unemployed persons is 0.1 percent lower against January 2015 and 0.6 percent lower against February 2014. Men’s unemployment rate is 0.6 percent higher than women’s.

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep qualifies for Miami Open quarterfinals

Romanian tennis player Simona Halep has qualified for quarterfinals of the WTA Miami Open defeating Italian Flavia Penetta in two sets. The Romanian was led in the opening set but she managed a sensational comeback in the second one. Simona Halep will next meet US player Sloane Stephens  (45 WTA). So far, the Romanian gathered a total of 215 WTA points and a 112.270 dollars check.
