Romanian Defence Minister on tour

Romanian Defence Minister Mircea Duşa was visiting the 86 Air Base in the south-eastern town of Feteşti on Tuesday. Mr. Duşa was expected to assess the progress made in restoring the landing runway in the area and he told reporters the plan was on schedule. The Defence Minister is also expected to visit the south Romanian village of Deveselu, in Olt county, the location where elements of the US antimissile shield will be deployed. The deployment to Romania was anticipated to occur in 2015 as part of the second phase of the European Phased Adaptive Approach – the US national contribution to NATO’s missile defence capability.

Raids at the Opera

Romanian prosecutors in the Sector 1 district of the capital Bucharest have raided the building of the country’s National Opera on Tuesday. Employees of the institution were allegedly involved in corruption-related crimes including abuse of office, false statements and conflict of interests, prosecutors claim. A number of searches were also reported. But no arrests were made, sources say. Suspects also include Răzvan Ioan Dincă, chief executive of Romania’s National Opera, who was summoned for hearing.

Protests of health trade unionists

Health trade unionists representing the Federative Chamber of Doctors’ Trade Unions and the Hypocrates Trade Union Federation are picketing the headquarters of Romania’s Health Ministry in the capital Bucharest on Tuesday. Some 100 health workers protested over wages in the country’s health system. Protesters also call for a new law on the issue which would be taking into account the current minimum wage in the country. Health Minister Nicolae Bănicioiu told reporters he was involved in a dialogue with all trade unionists in the system, and there was a chance for a pay rise later this year.

Romanian citizens saved from Yemen

Another five Romanians have been evacuated from Yemen on Monday night, and they were currently on their way to Saudi Arabia, according to reports on Tuesday. The five were the last Romanian citizens who left Yemen at their request, Romania’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Some 73 Romanians were evacuated from Yemen in recent days following the violence in the country.
