Romania is subject to close monitoring by the European Commission on the fight against corruption, writes AFP

The Mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu is to be presented to the Bucharest Tribunal with proposal of preventive arrest for bribe taking charges. National Anticorruption Directorate accuses him of having taken 25,000 euros from businessmen interested in winning public contracts and argues that the money represent only the portion of the total amount of 60,000 euros. Sorin Oprescu’s lawyer says, however, that the accusations are unfounded. Foreign news agencies informed about this case. For example, France Presse notes that Romania is subject to close monitoring by the European Commission on the fight against corruption and notes that in recent years dozens of current and former officials were investigated and even convicted for corruption. Reuters says that Romania is one of the most corrupt European Union state, but recent repressive actions against high-level corruption have brought appreciations from Brussels and foreign investors for Romanian prosecutors.
