Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on a visit to US

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis starts an official visit to the United States on Thursday. Mr. Iohannis is expected to attend the UN General Assembly in New York before heading for Washington D. C. for talks with US Vicepresident Joe Biden. The UN is expected to promote its Agenda 2030 at its General Anssembly. The Sustainable Development Agenda to be adopted by world leaders features 17 new sustainable development goals that aim to end poverty, promote prosperity and people’s well-being while protecting the environment by 2030. Slated to be one of the largest-ever gatherings at the UN, the Sustainable Development Summit will be attended by more than 150 heads of state and world leaders. President Iohannis will also attend a summit of leaders of the international coalition fighting Daesh (the so-called Islamic State – IS) in Syria and Irak following an invitation by US President Barack Obama. The summit on countering violent extremism on September 29 comes one year after President Obama vowed to crush Daesh. It’s unclear if Russia’s President Vladimir Putin would attend the summit. However, he recently said Russia was preparing to launch unilateral airstrikes against IS. The head of Romania’s Intelligence Service (SRI) Eduard Hellvig is also in the US for meetings with American intelligence officials.

Romanian PM Victor Ponta in London

Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta is expected to meet officials of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in London on Thursday, according to a statement of government spokesman Corneliu Calotă.Talks will focus on a potential agreement between the two sides. The Romanian government on Wednesday adopted a memorandum concerning an agreement with the EBRD branch in the capital Bucharest. The Romanian delegation to London also includes Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici. Established in 1991, EBRD is owned by 64 countries with the US as biggest shareholder along with the European Union and European Investment Bank. Initially focused on the countries of the former Eastern Bloc it expanded to support development in 30 countries from central Europe to Central Asia.

Romania could join the euro by 2022 – 2023, BNR official says

Romania could join EU’s single currency by 2022 – 20223, Deputy Governor of Romania’s National Bank (BNR) Bogdan Olteanu said at a conference with foreign investrs in the capital Bucharest on Thursday. Mr. Olteanu told audiences Romania was among the few countries who looked ptimistically forward to join the euro. Howeer, many politicians and representatives of Romanian elite acknowledged that such membership required extensive efforts. In May 2014, Liviu Voinea, the Romanian Budget Minister at the time, said Romania set January 1, 2019 as its target date for joining the euro as the country met almost all adoption criteria.

Race for Romania’s governing  PSD leadership

The head of the Bucharest branch of the left-wing governing  Social Democratic Party (PSD) withdrew his name from the race for the party leadership just one day after he announced is candidature. Robert Negoiţă, also mayor of the|Sector 3 in the capital Bucharest, said he made the move in support of the PSD acting leader Liviu Dragnea who said he intended to become a candidate. An announcement on the issue is expected at a party meeting in the southern Teleorman county, Mr.Dragnea said on Thursday.
