National Order „Star of Romania” bestowed to NATO Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow

President Klaus Iohannis has signed the decree decorating NATO Deputy Secretary-General, Ambassador Alexander Vershbow. According to a press release by the Presidency, the head of state bestowed the National Order „Star of Romania” in Grand Officer rank to the Ambassador, „as a sign of high appreciation for his steady interest in our country and constant support for Romania, for his vision towards development and fulfilment of Euro-Atlantic security, for promoting international cooperation towards a successful aproach of challenges brought by the new millennium”, Radio Romania announced.

Romania gets 48-million euro loan from IBRD to fight nutrient pollution

Romania will get a 48-million euro foreign loan for programs meant to reduce nutrient pollution following an agreement signed by the Finance Ministry with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The money will be used to improve animal and residual waste management, as well as afforestations and manure storage equipments in order to counteract soil and underground water pollution – according to a press release by the Finance Ministry. Minister Anca Dragu has underlined the importance of funding such promotion of best practices in agricultural production given Romania’s significant number of rural population. The Environment Ministry is going to update the Code of agricultural best practices and farmers will benefit from training to abide by it. The use of manure as a fertilizer is the main source of nutrient pollution, Radio Romania reported.

Romania’s Ombudsman notified ex officio regarding absence of certain oncologic medication from the market

Romania’s Ombudsman was notified ex officio regarding absence from drugstores of certain oncologic medication used to treat breast or prostate cancer. The notification follows press reports and public petitions about the absence of cheaper cytostatic drugs for almost a year due to „insufficient profit” they bring to vendors. The Ombudsman has stated in a press release that this situation is hindering therapy handbooks established by the Health Ministry for treatments prescribed for different types of cancer. For almost a year now, a number of 20 drugs essential to cancer patients and other chronic diseases are absent from the market. Pharmacists say prices of the medication in question have dropped lately and importers are no longer interested in them, Radio Romania reported.

First feature 3D animation film produced in Romania premieres in Bucharest

The first feature 3D animation film produced in Romania called „Mercy Street” premieres in Bucharest today. Romanian actors Ionuţ Grama, Cristi Iacob, Raluca Iuraşcu and Marius Stănescu are the voices of characters in the movie directed by Ştefan and Alexandru Buzea. The 80-minute film talks about friendship, courage, sacrifice and love. It can be watched starting tonight in 30 movie theatres across the country, but the producers are going to make projections for children in smaller towns that do not have cinemas, Radio Romania informed.
