Romania’s Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş is in New York

While in New York in order to attend the high-level meetings of the 71st session of the UN General Assembly, Romanian Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş is expected to meet José Graziano da Silva, Director General of UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and hold talks with American businessmen investing in Romania on Thursday. Mr. Cioloş’s Tuesday agenda included a meeting with delegates of the US Romanian community at an art gallery where he campaigned for the „Wisdom of the Earth” („Cuminţenia Pământului”). A masterpiece of the Romanian artist Constantin Brâncuşi, the „Wisdom of the Earth” is a work of art which Romania is about to lose unless the Romanian government will find the 20 million euro to pay for it.

Measles outbreak fears in north-western Romania

Romanian doctors are concerned they are witnessing a measles outbreak in northern and western Romania, according to a statement issued by the country’s Health Ministry on Thursday. Three babies died and other 675 cases were detected in eight months after last year’s statistics reported only seven infections and no lethal cases. The outbreak could occur as parents refused vaccines for their kids, the ministry said while also blaming the existing campaign against vaccination for the current fall of immunisation rates. Measles is a highly contagious infection which spreads easily through the coughs and sneezes of those infected. Radio Romania expressed its support for the vaccination in a campaign recently.

Former Romanian president’s daughter appears before DNA

The elder daughter of Romania’s former President Traian Băsescu appeared before prosecutors of the country’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) on Thursday. Ioana Băsescu was apparently questioned for her alleged involvement in a corruption-related case. There are no further details about the case while Ms. Băsescu stopped short from making any comment to reporters. Also at the DNA headquarters in the capital Bucharest, on Thursday, are expected former Regional Development and Tourism Minister Elena Udrea and Dan Andronic, a well-known journalist. Mr. Andronic appears as a witness in a file opened in 2015.

Romania’s Social Democrats meet in south-eastern Romania

Leaders of Romania’s Social Democratic Party (PSD) are meeting in Murighiol, a town in the south-eastern county f Tulcea on Thursday. High on the agenda are the preparations for the country’s parliamentary elections on December 11. Also under discussion are the current stage of the steps made during the election campaigns across the country, proposals of candidates attending the race, future steps to be made in the effort to win the elections and the alleged PSD governing programme in case the party would claim its victory, PSD leader Liviu Dragnea said in a statement on Thursday.
