President Klaus Iohannis addresses Parliament with a message about the change of criminal codes

President Klaus Iohannis will address Parliament, today at 12:00, with a message about the change of criminal codes and the reactions generated by this step. Government coalition leaders asked that the message to contain an appeal for calm in the context of the large protests which took place in several cities of the country. President Klaus Iohannis considers that criminal law changes initiated by the government, which generated a strong civic reaction, must be brought to attention from the rostrum of Parliament. Therefore, last week he sent a letter to the leadership of both houses of Parliament in which he expressed his intention to address a message to senators and deputies. The head of state disavowed from the start changing criminal legislation through an emergency ordinance and in recent weeks he often expressed his dissatisfaction. He said that his mission is to restore the rule of law and that he will do everything for Romania to be freed from corruption. In this context, he announced triggering procedures for a referendum in which people will express their will on continuing the fight against corruption and ensuring the integrity of public office. Regarding the message which the President of Romania will deliver to Parliament today, government coalition leaders expect that it will contain a call for calm and stability, in the context of the large protests which took place in several cities of the country.
