Messages of condolence after King Mihai’s death

The President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Junker expressed his deepest grief after receiving the news of His Majesty King Mihai’s death. Also, the international media has recalled the personality of the former sovereign who died yesterday, at his residency in Switzerland. King Mihai has embodied the tragic destiny of his country, in the 20th century, caught in the turmoil of The Second World War and, afterwards, in the swamp of the communism, says France Press. Washington Post mentions the fact that His Majesty lived a life marked by political intrigue and by almost all revolutions that took place on the European continent, in the last century. Pushed aside by the communists, he lived in exile for dozens of years. He came back to his country after the fall of the soviet block and, eventually, he took on the unofficial role of diplomat, helping Romania to join NATO and The European Union. The German press agency DPA writes that the most remarkable political gesture King Mihai made was declaring war against Nazi Germany, on August 23rd 1944 and arresting Adolf Hitler’s ally, Romanian prime minister at the time, Ion Antonescu. In Romania, president Klaus Iohannis, former heads of state of Romania, the prime minister and the presidents of the two Parliament houses, but also opposition leaders have sent condolence messages after finding out King Mihai has died. In Romania, three days of national mourning will be declared, in remembrance of King Mihai, on December 14th, 15th and 16th.
