French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian pays a visit to Bucharest

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is visiting Romania, will meet in Bucharest with President Klaus Iohannis, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila and with his Romanian counterpart Teodor Melescanu. The French Minister’s visit takes place in the context in which French President Francois Macron seeks to get a greater support among member states for a series of institutional reforms of the European Union. Romania has the lowest level of unemployment in recent years and is experiencing an economic growth over the European Union average, but this is mainly based on consumption and borrowing. Social inequalities persist and the budget deficit risks to fall short of the 3% of GDP target, reveals EU Country Report for Romania. On the other hand, Romanian Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici says that our country has registered good economic figures but he recognizes that action should be taken towards transferring from consumption to investment in terms of engines of economic growth. Romanian authorities have banned the entry into the country of a potato shipment from Egypt, a quantity of 1,100 tonnes, after tests showed they had brown rot disease. In a press release the Ministry of Agriculture informs that there is a risk of contamination of soil and surface water with this bacterium and the economic impact could have been extremely severe given that currently there is no chemical or biological method to eradicate this damaging organism.
