Romania will throw away any chance to become a non-permanent member in the UN Security Council, if it moves its Israel Embassy to Jerusalem, President Iohannis says

The Romanian President, Klaus Iohannis, has met President of the United Nations General Assembly, Miroslav Lajcak, on Tuesday, as Romania is negotiating for a seat as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, for the period 2020-2021. Miroslav Lajcak has said that he did not comment on the national governments’ intentions, but he underlined that there were a series of resolutions by the UN General Assembly and the Security Council, according to which the statute of Jerusalem should be decided by both parties – Israelis and Palestinians. The Romanian President has said that he so far received no analysis from the government, regarding the scope of moving the embassy to Jerusalem.

The Strategic Dialogue Meeting Romania – US, that was co-chaired by the Romanian Deputy Prime Minister for Strategic Partnerships Ana Birchall and the American Assistant Secretary of State, Wess Mitchell, has taken place on Tuesday, at Bucharest’s Victory Palace. The agenda included issues as regional security and economic cooperation. Ana Birchall has welcomed the joint efforts by the two states, which have a decisive role in ensuring security and stability in Central and Eastern Europe, expecially in areas like energy, transport and digital infrastructure. Mrs. Birchall has underlined Romania’s interest in identifying and developing new common projects. Ana Birchall has called for the US support for Romania’s accession to Visa Waiver program and thanked Washington for its endorsement in Romania’s candidacy for accession to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

President Klaus Iohannis has met the American Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs

Bolstering the trans-Atlantic relation is vital for Romania, President Klaus Iohannis has said, as he met the US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, Wess Mitchell, who visited the country. As far as economic bilateral relations, Klaus Iohannis has underlined that Romania needs stability, predictability, and a powerful justice system, which are not optional, but is the only choice that the country should make. The United States hope that Romania will continue to consolidate its democracy and rule of law and are closely following developments in this area, Wess Mitchell has said. The American official also met the Romanian Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu who has said that Romania pays a great importance to the Strategic Partnership with the US and ways to deepen it.
