The Romanian Ambassador to the United States has been called to the SRI Control Committee

The Romanian Envoy to the United States and former chief of the Romanian Information Service (SRI) George Maior has been heard at the parliamentary committee that monitors the activity of SRI. Before the hearing, Mr. Maior has said that there is a political interest in him leaving the ambassador post. He says that he told the truth about the letter of the former US Federal Prosecutor Rudolph Giuliani, which was sent to the authorities in Bucharest.
George Maior: I believe that I said the truth and that I have worked for the national interest. I do not understand how anyone could state that I have interfered in the American politics, when it comes to a private person. I haven’t seen a single gesture, attitude or statement from the American part to confirm that. If there is a political interest that I leave this job – and I can see that there is – that is something determined by political reasons that must be explained. I cannot explain them to myself, as they are not related to diplomacy and the fact that I did my job for the national interest, in Romania.

A Romanian-born French swimmer has been appointed Minister of Sports in France

The former French swimmer of Romanian origin Roxana Maracineanu has been appointed as Minister of Sports in France, replacing the former Olympic fencing champion Laura Flessel, who has announced her resignation on Tuesday morning, citing personal reasons, according to France Presse. Roxana Maracineanu, who is 43, was born in Romania. She was a backstroke world champion for France in 1998 and an Olympic silver medalist in 2000. The French President also replaced the minister for ecological transition Nicolas Hulot, who resigned last week, with the speaker of the national assembly Francois de Rugy.

The Romanian President has suspended the CSAT session, as the government’s budget correction threatens the national security

The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has on Tuesday suspended the session of the Country’s Supreme Defense Council (CSAT) and asked the government to come with a new draft for budgetary correction that would eliminate the unexplainable cuts made to institutions with national security duties. The President has reminded that the principle of loyal cooperation between institutions should be respected and called „inadmissible” that the Romanian security might be put in jeopardy due to a positive budgetary correction,
Klaus Iohannis: By suspending the CSAT meeting, I offered the government the possibility to come back with a new draft for budgetary correction, to give up the cuts in the national security area, which could not be explained under any circumstances, unless we use a term like „political baffle”. The CSAT advice will come after the situation is solved and we come back to dialogue and collaboration.
