The Romanian Foreign Minister sent President Klaus Iohannis the proposal to recall the US Ambassador to the United States, George Maior

The Romanian Foreign Minister, Teodor Meleşcanu, sent President Klaus Iohannis a proposal to recall the US Ambassador to the United States, George Maior. According to a press release, this proposal is based on an analysis of the Ambassador’s work and was based on an impact assessment on relations with the United States, as evidenced by a report by the Parliamentary Committee on Controlling the Work of the Romanian Intelligence Service on the use of SRI by George Major for personal purposes. In that document, George Maior – who prior to his appointment as ambassador to Washington was director of the SRI – is accused of having conducted „political police” actions. The ambassador replied saying he was appalled by the accusations brought to him and demanded full declassification of hearings in the parliamentary committee for controlling the SRI’s work. President Klaus Iohannis has announced that he will take a decision on Romania’s ambassador to the United States, George Maior, after the summit in Sibiu.

The June 1990 Mineriad”s file returns to the General Prosecutor”s Office

The June 1990 Mineriad’s file was sent back to the General Prosecutor’s Office after a judge from the High Court of Cassation and Justice canceled all the evidence in the indictment act. The decision, taken yesterday, was challenged by acting General Prosecutor Bogdan Licu. In 2017, military prosecutors completed their investigation into Mineriad’s file and sued 14 people. These include former president Ion Iliescu, then Prime Minister Petre Roman and former Director of the Romanian Intelligence Service, Virgil Măgureanu. According to the investigators, they would have organized and coordinated the attack against the demonstrators in the University Square in Bucharest, who expressed their political opinions in a peaceful way, in contradiction with those of the government at that time. Then six people died, nearly 1.300 were physically and mentally injured, and 1.200 were arrested.
