The Romanian Army Day, celebrated in Bucharest, Satu-Mare and Carei

In Bucharest, Satu-Mare and Carei, military and religious ceremonies were held on Friday, to mark the Romanian Army Day. 75 years ago, the Romanian troops were fighting for the liberation of Northern Transylvania. In 1959, October 25 was declared by decree the Day of the Romanian Army. This historical date reminds of the day in 1944 when the last Romanian land in Northern Transylvania was set free, after the Battle of Carei. The Romanian army managed to regain the national territory lost after the Vienna dictate, in 1940. Ceremonies were held on Friday in Bucharest and also in the main barracks in the country. Military ceremonies were performed at the Monument of the Second World War Heroes, the National Defense University and at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in the Carol park, attended by the President of Romania Klaus Iohannis and the Army Chief of Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca. The two were also present at ceremonies organized in Satu Mare and Carei. President Klaus Iohannis has said that Romania needs a strong army, as the regional and global security environment is permanently changing.

Foreign migrants trying to cross illegally from Romania to Hungary, found at the Nadlac Border Crossing

Police at the Nadlac Border Crossing 1, between Romania and Hungary have found 20 citizens from Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq, Somalia and India, who were trying to illegally leave the country. They were hiding in a pallet-laden van, bound for Austria. According to a Police statement, five teenagers were among the migrants.

A delegation from the Magurele ELI-NP Center went to Washington to discuss technical assistance and technology transfer collaboration

A team from the ELI-NP Center in Măgurele, where the world’s strongest laser is located, was in Washington for a week to meet with representatives of universities, research laboratories and US government agencies that offer funding for scientific programs. On Friday, Romanian researchers discussed with the director of the Office for Science and Technology at the State Department. The delegation was led by academician Nicolae Zamfir, director of ELI-NP:
Nicolae Zamfir: This office is coordinating a program – „Science Ambassadors. Within this program we had a researcher who spent several weeks with us, in Măgurele, with excellent results. A second ambassador of science, a member of the National Science Foundation’s leadership, is due to come in next week, so that future collaboration points will be established. They are also extremely open to providing technical assistance and technology transfer collaboration to bring the high-tech industry around the ELI-NP Center.
