Yesterday’s election had the lowest turnout in the country in the last 30 years for a first round of elections for the Presidency. Official data show that less than 48% of voters came to the polls. For comparison, in the first round of the presidential elections five years ago the attendance was over 52%. The inhabitants of Ilfov County were the best mobilized this year – with a presence of 63%; Cluj follows – with over 59%, Sibiu and Braşov – with almost 54 percent. Among the counties with the lowest voter turnout is Vaslui – with less than 36%, Covasna, Satu Mare or Maramureş. In Bucharest, the attendance at the polls was over 51%./opopescu

The first round of the Romanian presidential elections was won by Klaus Iohannis, the current head of state. Following the processing of 93% of the votes in the country, Iohannis obtained about 37% of the votes. On second place is Viorica Dăncilă, the former Social Democratic Prime Minister, with just over 24% of the vote. With this result it became clear that Viorica Dăncilă, PSD president, will be Klaus Iohannis’ rival in the second round, on November 24-th./opopescu

Ranking of the candidates after the first round of the Romanian presidential elections

President Klaus Iohannis is leading after the first round of yesterday’s presidential elections, according to the latest data from the website of the Permanent Electoral Authority, after centralizing information from all sections of the country and 823 from the 835 organized abroad. In total, Iohannis obtained 37.8 percent of the votes casted in the country and in the diaspora. He will be competing in the second round with PSD leader Viorica Dăncilă, who convinced 22.35% of Romanians with voting rights. On the third place, with almost 15 percentof the ballots, is USR-PLUS candidate Dan Barna. If we only refer to the vote of Romanians from abroad, Klaus Iohannis obtained almost 53 percent of the options, and Dan Barna ranks second with 27, 5 percent. Viorica Dăncilă was voted by 2.74 percent of Romanians with voting rights in the diaspora./opopescu
