Food Waste Has Reached Alarming Levels in the European Union and Romania

Food waste has reached alarming levels in the European Union and in Romania, and both governmental and big retail chains representatives warned that measures are necessary to reduce this phenomenon. Recent data suggest that Romanians throw, annually, 2,2 tons of food, which means 6000 tons a day, while 66% of families cannot insure their daily food and five million people are on the edge of poverty.

László Borbély: We have to create a system. And what does this system mean? We are talking about food waste, we have had a law since 2016, we have had implementing norms since January but there are still things to be done. There are some goodhearted associations that have stores, that make efforts to save at least some of this wasted food. There are food banks that are part of the European Food Banks Federation (FEBA) and, obviously, all those who want to participate.
László Borbély is the coordinator of the Governmental Department for Sustainable Development.

Food waste will be discussed today, in Bucharest. At the international conference organized by the Governmental Department for Sustainable Development along with Sărbătoarea Gustului Association will be attended by the agriculture and rural development minister, Adrian Oros, Laszlo Csutak president of the Sanitary Veterinary National Authority for Food Safety, and representatives of big retail chains from Romania and abroad.
