Message of condolences sent by President Iohannis to his Ecuadorian counterpart

At least 235 people died and more than 1,500 were injured in the earthquake which struck Ecuador on Saturday, according to a new statement released by authorities. The magnitude-7.8 quake on the Richter Scale was followed by 55 aftershocks. Tens of thousands of soldiers were deployed along the country’s coasts. Rescue efforts were thwarted by a landslide produced in the affected area, dozens of access road being blocked. This is the strongest earthquake recorded in Ecuador after the one 1979. Romanian President Klaus Iohannis sent a message of condolences to his Ecuadorian counterpart Rafael Correa. (RADIO ROMANIA reports)

Minister Lazăr Comănescu will attend the meeting of EU foreign ministers in Luxembourg

Romanian Minister Lazăr Comănescu will be present today at the meeting of EU foreign ministers, in Luxembourg, during which aspects of external migration, the European Union strategy for Syria and Iraq and the terrorist threat represented by the jihadist organization Islamic State (IS) will be discussed, according to a press release of the Romanian Foreign Ministry. There will also be exchanged views on Eastern Partnership, in preparation of next month reunion, but also in light of recent tensions in the Caucasus, where armed conflict broke out again between Armenia and Azerbaijan in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh at the beginning of the month. Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos is expected to announce in the coming period the appointment of a new Minister of Labour. The former holder of this portfolio, Ana Costea, resigned after trade unions expressed dissatisfaction on the draft emergency ordinance on public sector salaries. Today, Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos will go to Tulcea, where he will participate in a public debate organized by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Administration regarding Danube Delta Integrated Sustainable Development Strategy. 8 medals for Romania at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad

Romania’s team won eight medals at this year’s edition of the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad. According to the Ministry of Education, there are five silver medals and three bronze medals. As the organizing country, Romania was represented by two teams of 4 students, all prize winners. At this year’s competition, which concluded Saturday in Busteni city, participated 143 girls from 38 countries. (RADIO ROMANIA reports)
