Romania’s new prime minister under debate between governing party leaders

Leaders of Romania’s governing Social Democratic Party (PSD) meet to discuss issues concerning the nomination of a new prime minister after the party dropped its support for its own premier. PSD leader Liviu Dragnea told journalists on Wednesday that his party was ready to discuss the issue with leaders of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrtas in Romania (ALDE), the junior party in the governing coalition. However, Sorin Grindeanu, who is still the country’s prime minister, told reporters that he would not resign. Mr. Grindeanu suggested that he would only resign after Romania’s center-right President Klaus Iohannis held parliamentary consultations and appointed a successor from the PSD.

Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Meleşcanu on a visit to Germany

Romania’s Foreign Minister Teodor Meleşcanu is in Germany for talks with German officials. At a joint press conference with his German counterpart Sigmar Gabriel on Wednesday, Mr. Meleşcanu told reporters that his country made its co-operation with Germany a priority in order to promote their shared values across the EU. Mr. Meleşcanu’s visit was meant to mark 50 years since Romania and Germany resumed their diplomatic relations, the 25th anniversary of a German-Romanian friendship treaty concerning their co-operation in Europe, and 10 years since Romania joined the European Union.

Mikhail Baryshnikov is in Romania

The highly acclaimed Russian-born American dancer, choreographer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov is in Romania for a short visit. Mr. Baryshnikov is currently in the central Romanian town of Sibiu where he is expected to perform in a one-man show based on poems of 1987 Nobel Prize winner Iosif Brodski, a Russian-American poet who was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1972. The Transylvanian town of Sibiu hosts an International Theatre Festival, also known as Sibfest and seen as the most important annual festival of performing arts in Romania. The ten-day festival is attended by famous theatre companies, Romanian and foreign theatre directors and filmmakers, dancers, and critics. Mr. Baryshnikov’s show is directed by Latvian director Alvis Hermanis. His show will go on stage on Thursday and Friday.
