Former MP before Romania’s ICCJ

A former MP has appeared before Romania’s High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ) in the capial Bucharest on Tuesday. It is the second time when Şerban Mihăilescu appears before ICCJ in a case where Senate Speaker Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu is accused of making false statements in a property fraud case. Last year, prosecutors charged Mr. Tăriceanu with making false statements under oath and hampering the investigation into a suspected fraudulent land restitution case. He denied any wrongdoing. Hearings into the case resumed after former judge Ana Maria Dascălu retired while being replaced by another judge. Şerban Mihăilescu brought nothing new to the statement he made in June when he said he met Mr. Tăriceanu at a party in Israel but they did not talk to each other. As the former MP formerly said the event took place in 2007 and then changed the date in 2009, a prosecutor with the country’s anti-corruption watchdog, the DNA, ruled that Mr. Mihăilescu should go on trial for lying under oath. A new date of Mr. Tăriceanu’s trial was set on November 28 when his former wife, Ioana Valmar, was also expected to appear in court.

Minister Toader is currently attending a meeting of prosecutors with the country’s Superior Council of Magistracy where the activity of senior officials with the country’s National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) comes under scrutiny.
