Romania marks 28 years since the anti-Communist Revolution

The Romanian Revolution against the Communist regime began 28 years ago, in December 1989, when Nicolae Ceausescu has called for a meeting in front of the Central Committee of the Communist Party in Bucharest, in order to condemn the behavior of the people who had protested in Timisoara. But the meeting was broken by groups of demonstrators who were dispersed by the security forces. After that, participants at the meeting, who were joined by other residents of Bucharest, have regrouped in front of Intercontinental Hotel, in University Square and close to the United States Embassy. During the night, live ammunition was used against the demonstrators and armored vehicles were brought in. That is how the Revolution started. 28 years later President Klaus Iohannis has laid a wreath at the monument dedicated to the Revolution heroes in the University Square, during a ceremony to commemorate the victims of December 1989.
