Romanian parliament’s statement 15 years after Romania’s accession to NATO

15 years after the country’s accession to NATO, Romanian parliament adopted a statement on Tuesday reiterating its commitment to NATO values and goals.The parliament expressed its concern about growing security threats against NATO allies while pointing out its support for Alliance’s anti-missile shields and measures aimed at preventing malicious cyber and hybrid activities. The document highlights the importance of continuing NATO’s open door policy while welcoming recent NATO accession of Montenegro and the Republic of Northern Macedonia. The statement was adopted with 238 votes. However, in his speech Romanian President Klaus Iohannis mentioned the unprecedented assault of the governing Social-Democrat majority (PSD) on the rule of law while pointing out that such moves could alter Romania’s position among NATO members and EU Member States. Prime Minister Viorica Dăncilă apologised in her speech for the Romanian president’s attempt to give the event an electoral touch.

Romania’s Supreme Court expected to rule on a complaint filed by former DNA chief

Romania’s Supreme Court is expected to issue its verdict on a complaint filed by former anti-corruption chief Laura Codruţa Kövesi against the measure of judicial scrutiny ruled by prosecutors of the newly created Special Section for the Investigation of Magistrates. Ms. Kövesi is accused of bribe, abuse of office and giving false testimony in the case of Nicolae Popa, former head of Romania’s National Investment Fund (FNI). A fugitive former businessman who was seeking asylum in neighbouring Serbia, Sebastian Ghiță, accused Ms. Kövesi of having asked him to pay 200,000 lei (43,000 €) for the extradition from Indonesia of Mr. Popa. The former FNI chief was brought back to Romania in April 2011.

Police campaign across the EU

Police officers across the EU are ready for their latest week-long speed enforcement operation, which runs for a week from Monday 1 to Sunday 7 April. Included in the week’s activity is this year’s 24-hour ‘Speed Marathon’, starting at 0000 on Wednesday, April 3. The ‘Speed Marathon’ concept opened six years ago in Germany. The concept, which involves inviting members of the public to identify locations where they believe speeding is a problem, has been adapted and this year is to be used in 26 participating countries. Operations in Romania are supervised by the Romanian Police Traffic Directorate.
