Romanian cabinet meeting

A Romanian government meeting is about to start at Victoria Palace in the capital Bucharest on Monday. Talks will focus on a draft law designed to comply with a previous ruling of the country’s Constitutional Court on quarantine and isolation rules concerning alleged COVID-19 pacients. On July 6, Romania reported 20,223 COVID-19 cases, with 1,768 deaths, and 20,213 recovered. The spread of the virus had a relatively slow evolution in March, highest daily increase being reported on April 11. Since May 17, the emergency regime in Romania has been replaced with a state of alert.

Car accident in Romania’s southern Călărași county

A car accident was reported in the Romanian southern county of Călărași early an Monday. A 20-year old driver from Sinești, a village in the southern Romanian county of Ialomița, has died in the incident. However, other three passengers in the car remained unharmed. The driver of the bus also involved in the incident was tested negative for drugs and alcohol. Romania (and Bulgaria) were the EU Member States with highest road fatality rates last year, according to figures issued by the European Commission. Speeding was the most common cause for road traffic incidents in Romania in 2020, followed by jaywalking while driving under alcohol was the least frequent cause for car accidents.

Simona Halep eyes Palermo tennis tour

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep is planning her return in Palermo, Sicily, in case the Italian tournament is to take place. The Wimbledon and Roland Garros winner, who ruled out playing next month’s US Open, said she was eager to return on tennis stage. The 31st Palermo Ladies Open is about to start on August 3 in case travel restrictions are lifted. The world’s No 2 has not played since her win over Kazakhstan’s Elena Rîbakina in the final of Dubai Duty Free Championships in February.
