Romania’s Covid-19 updates

Romania reported a total of 276,802 Covid-19 cases on Thursday, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communications Group (GCS). The number of new cases hit 9,714 while a total of 191,085 people were cured. 7,540 people died with 121 deaths reported only between November 4- 5 (68 men, and 53 women). Highest Covid-19 rates were reported in Romania’s western county of Timiș (551 cases) followed by the Transylvanian county of Cluj (534 cases), Prahova (a county in souther Romania – 396), Iassy (north-eastern Romania – 394 cases), and central Trasylvanian counties of Mureș (343 cases), Sibiu (340) and Brașov (323 cases). Romania’s capital Bucharest reported a record-level of 1,084 cases.

Romania’s new environment minister

Mircea Fechet is becoming the new Environment Minister of Romania after the country’s President Klaus Iohannis approved the appointment on Thursday. Mr Fechet was a state secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests since 2019 before former minister Costel Alexe resigned from the job. Alexe left the ministry after being appointed as president of the County Council of Iassy, the capital of a north-eastern county, following local elections last month. Mr. Fechet is a graduate of the George Bacovia University in Bacău (north-eastern Romania) and the Lower Danube University in Galatzi (an eastern port on the river Danube).

Protests organised by Federation of Sanitary Solidarity

Delegates of Romania’s Federation of Sanitary Solidarity (FSS) organise a protest before Romanian government’s headquarters in Victoria Plaza of the capital Bucharest on Thursday. Protesters call for an adoption of every necesary  measure designed to ensure the good health and safety of healthcare workers in the country while pointing out the Covid-19 should be seen as a professional disease for all professionals in the field. Protesters pointed out that such protests would be held every Thursday until their requests were met. Romania is seeng one of the worst surges in Covid-19 cases, and the Romanian governent this week announced a range of fresh measures, including more mask requirements.
