Romania has registered the first case of infection with the coronavirus variant detected in the United Kingdom

The new strain of coronavirus first detected in the United Kingdom, has been found in Romania, in the case of a 27-year-old woman from the county of Giurgiu, who said that she had not left the country, according to the spokesperson of the „Matei Balş” Infectious Diseases Institute in Bucharest. He added that the virus is already circulating in Romania and reminded that it is much more contagious. The patient is in isolation at home, supervised by the family doctor. The Ministry of Health has warned that, because of the high transmission rate of this strain, in parallel with the national vaccination campaign, protection measures remain just as important: the protective mask, social distance and hand hygiene.

High risk of avalanches in the Fagaras Mountains

There is a high risk of avalanches in the Fagaras Mountains. The snow layer at Balea Lac is 149 cm thick and there is grade 4 an avalanche risk at altitudes higher than 1,800m and a grade 3 risk below this altitude, on a scale of 1 to 5, according to the Public Mountain Rescue Service Arges. Meteorologists say that it will continue to snow in these areas in the coming days, and then the weather will get slightly warmer, so large avalanches are expected to appear, especially on the eastern slopes.

Updated COVID-19 tally in Romania

Romanian authorities have reported a further 4,841 COVID-19 cases in Romania, out of more than 31,500 tests performed in the last 24 hours. Most new cases were detected in the capital Bucharest, followed by the counties of Timis, Ilfov, Cluj and Iasi. There were also 96 new fatalities related to this virus and 1,100 patients are currently in Intensive Care. Since the start of the vaccination campaign, Romania has immunized 76.000 hospital employees, and 264 of them have reported side effects. 17,846 people were vaccinated in the last 24 hours and the country is due to start the second phase of the vaccination program next week.
