Annual draft budget for 2021 enters public debate

The draft budget for 2021 entered a public debate on Wednesday, the main challenge being to reduce the budget deficit to no more than 7%, according to Romania’s commitment to the European Commission. The Romanian Executive is considering a number of measures to reduce spending, including the elimination of holiday vouchers and the capping of bonuses for public servants, including those granted to prefects. Following a recent analysis in the budget system, it was found that the expenses with the salary increases amount to about 600 million lei, and the value of this year’s holiday vouchers to 1,7 billion lei.

Protests in Bucharest against the salary inequities of the public employees

Trade unionists affiliated with the Publisind Federation in Romania, which includes public order workers, penitentiaries and the judiciary, protested on Wednesday in front of the Parliament Palace in Bucharest. The protesters demanded the application of the framework law on public sector salaries and the elimination of salary inequities in the public system. „Prime Minister Florin Cîţu can eliminate all salary increases he want, we are not interested, but we ask him to replace them with a decent, logical, coherent salary, which we should agree”, declared the president of the Publisind Federation, Ștefan Teoroc.

Romania coronavirus updates

Romania reported 3,048 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday from over 33,000 tests processed within 24 hours. Most new cases, 351, were registered in the capital Bucharest. Were also reported 79 deaths, and currently 955 patients with the new coronavirus are hospitalized for intensive care. So far, Romania has registered a total of 752.482 cases of infection and a total of 19.135 coronavirus deaths.
