Prime Minister Florin Citu has met European officials in Brussels

The Romanian Prime Minister Florin Citu has ended his visit in Brussels, where he had a series of meetings with leaders of the main institutions and European political parties. He discussed with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, about ending the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism on Romania’s Judiciary and the country’s accession to the Schengen area. The European official has expressed his endorsement for Romania on both issues. Mr. Citu is also due to meet the European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, to whom he will convey Romania’s interest to continue the open dialogue with the European Union, especially in the current background marked by the pandemic, which requires enhanced unity and coordination.

Updated tally of COVID-19 pandemic in Romania

The Romanian authorities have reported on Friday 2,550 new cases of COVID-19 infections, out of more that 30,000 tests performed in the last 24 hours. 77 people have died and 973 patients are admitted to Intensive Care Units. Most new cases were reported in Bucharest – 379. The counties of Timis and Maramures are still in the red zone, with 3.62 and 3.06 cases, respectively, per a thousand inhabitants, in the last 14 days. Since the first case was reported in Romania, around 90% of people who contracted the coronavirus have recovered.

The European Commission has accepted to offer funds for new highways in Romania

The European Commission will give Romania money from the National Recovery and Resilience Facility in order to build highways, provided that the country submits environmentally friendly and well prepared projects, the European Transport Commissioner Adina Valean has told Radio Romania. She added that a Commission specialized group had been convened in order to offer technical assistance to the Romanian authorities in preparing large projects for road infrastructure. In a statement in Brussels on Friday, Prime Minister Florin Citu has said that there are premises for the revival of the Romanian economy, as confirmed on Friday by winter forecasts published by the European Commission.
