In the capital Bucharest, the number of new cases hit 1685, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GCS). With its 385 cases  reported, the north-western county of Cluj is leader among other counties across the country. Cluj is followed by Ilfov (southern Romania) with 310 cases, Constantza (south-eastern Romania) with 190 cases, and Brașov (central Romania) with 179 cases.

Many Romanian hospitals unable to receive new Covid-19 pacients

Romanian doctors are concerned about the large number of Covid-19 pacients who could not be treated as many hospitals in the country were unable to host new pacients. Frontline doctors have testified to deteriorating conditions in hospitals. There are no hospital vacancies in such cities as Iassy (north-eastern Romania), Brașov (central Romania), and Deva (western Romania), according to a statement issued by hospital representatives on Monday. Authorities on Monday set record figures for pacients in need of medical care, with more than 14,000 people in Covid hospitals, and 1,478 under intensive care. The so-called British version of the virus suffered a dagerous mutation in Romania as such case was discovered at the County Emmergency Hospital in the city of Suceava (northern Romania) where samples were collected from a pacient who did not travel to Britain recently. In recent months, several new variants of the original virus (the so-called wild type) have been spotted. These viral versions popped up in different geographical regions, such as the UK, South Africa, and Brazil.

Plans of Romania’s Prime Minister

Romanian Prime Minister Florin Cîțu plans to ease Covid-19 confinement measures in June. Mr Cîțu called on Romanians to exercise pacience and further respect current rules in order to meet the plan. The move will come as more than 6,000,000, nearly a third of Romania’s population, may get the vaccine by the end of May.  Florin Cîțu has been a member of the Senate on the ticket of the center-right-wing National Liberal Party (PNL) and has served as minister of finance in the Liberal Government of Ludovic Orban since november 2019.
