Romanian former Senate speaker cleared of any wrongdoings

A former Romanian Parliament’s Senate speaker was cleared on Tuesday of any wrongdoings in connection with his case before the country’s High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ). Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, a former leading member of the governing National Liberal Party (PNL), and then leader of the newly created Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Romania (ALDE), had to answer allegations of abuse of office and complicity to arrogating official positions. A prosecutor called for the aquittal of Mr Tariceanu one month ago when he claimed the alleged crime was not included in the criminal law. However, the ICCJ verdict is not final as it could be appealed within 10 days.
