Pension increase it’s a must, Romanian labour minister says

Romanian Labour Minister ruled out  any attempt of giving up a pension increase and solutions designed to solve inequialities in the system while pointing out such issues were a must. The issue was mentioned in talks with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis at a meeting earlier last month, minister Marius Budăi wrote in a message to the press on Tuesday. Talks also included the prospect of renegotiating the pension increase of 9.4 percent of the GDP as mentioned in EU’s current Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). President Iohannis expressed his interest in the issue, Mr. Budăi said. Romania had the highest rate of population at risk of poverty, over 50% larger than the EU average, according to Eurostat data in 2021.

New measures in support of Romania’s HoReCa sector

Romania’s Cabinet has approved new measures in support of the ailing hospitality sector (HoReCa). The government of Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă has delayed by 180 days the tax excempt allowing the recovery of a sector hardly hit following the COVID-19 pandemic. As the effects of COVID-19 spread across the world, the central focus for Romania’s government and businesses is the safety of their people. However, bars and clubs have fared the worst. Accomodation and food activities have been the sectors most affected by lockdowns and government restrictions.

Romanians celebrate St. Tryphon Day

Romanian Christian Orthodox and Roman Catholic believers celebrate St. Tryphon Day on February 1. St Tryphon is venerated in the Christian Orthodox Church where he is also the patron saint of farmers, gardeners, and vine growers. His relics were first buried in his native city of Campasada (Turkey) before being transfered to Constantinople (Istanbul of today), and then to Rome. His head is kept in the Kotor Cathedral in Montenegro, one of the two Roman Catholic cathedrals in the country.

Romania coronavirus updates

Romania reported 40,018 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, which is 19,887 cases more than the previous day, with 97 deaths (56 men, 41 women), and another 937 people under intensive care (34 more than on Monday). In the capital Bucharest, the number of cases hit 5,674, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GSC). With its 5,674 cases reported, Bucharest still leads among other regions in the country, followed by the western county of Timiș. with 1,867 cases, north-western county of Cluj, with 1,638 cases, and south-eastern county of Constanța. with 1,287 cases.
