The Delta variant hasn’t been identified in Romania lately, but there is a surge in cases of BA.2

The Delta variant of the coronavirus stopped being identified in our country but the number of cases with the new sub-variant of Omicron has risen. The variant is studied by researchers all around the world at the moment. The conclusion comes from a chain of private clinics that constantly sequence probes taken from infected people.
MedLife specialists have identified 46 cases of COVID with the new Omicron sub-variant, called BA.2, and no cases of Delta variant in the last series of 171 sequenced probes. This is the second time in a row that Delta is no longer present in the sequence, which confirms that the variant that generated the pandemic wave in autumn has now been replaced by Omicron. Doctors signal that in two weeks the percentage of probes identified with BA.2 has risen from 3% to 27% of the studied samples, but so far there hasn’t been an impact on the evolution of the number of cases, nationwide. The study confirms the accelerated rhythm of spreading of this Omicron sub-variant but, beyond the high level of transmission and the low level of response to the vaccine, apparently BA.2 is similar with the Delta variant, as far as the severity of the disease, with a capacity to cause more serios forms. The coordinator of the study mentioned that it is still to be seen if this sub-variant will prolong the fifth wave of the pandemic.
