Romania’s National Environmental Guard in action

Romania’s National Environmental Guard (GNM) raided an area in Bolintin Vale, a town in the southern county of Giurgiu. The raids early on Thursday focused on illegal waste in the region. Environment Minister Tánczos Barna visited an area where GNM commssioners, police and members of the gendarmerie raided places where waste was illegaly burned while people in charge were unable to present legal papers for the job. Burning is usually a poor waste management because it can cause air, land and water pollution. Romania has the second lowest waste-recycling rates in the European Union, overflowing with waste and garbage, most of it brought in illegaly from abroad.

Protests of Romania’s railway service workers

Workers of Romania’s railway services (CFR) are organising protests on Thursday in front of several institutions along with workers of CFR hospitals in the capital Bucharest. Protesters demand better working conditions, CFR’s restructuring and purchase of new trains. The Romanian railways are in bad shape even the network is one of the longest in Europe. However, the infrastructure and its equipment require modernisation and maintenance – urgencies currently neglected.

MAI’s CC police officer sent to court

A police officer with the Romanian Interior Ministry’s Control Corps was sent to court on Thursday, according to a statement of Romania’s anti-corruption watchdog, the DNA. Daniel Asanache – Damian is accused of influence peddling after he received from a man RON 15,000 in exchange of his help aimed at solving the man’s legal problems. Between April and Auguust, Mr. Asanache-Damian allegedly received large sums of money, including the pay of a phone bill  of RON 3,700. The DNA caught  Mr. Asanache-Daamian while receiving RON 15,000. The file was sent to a Bucharest court with a preventive arrest proposal for the defendant.
