Romanian PM on a visit in northern Romania

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă is visiting the north-western county of Bihor on Thursday. He is expected to evaluate the progress made in developing a road linking A3 Biharia Highway to Oradea – Sântandrei Beltway in north-western Romania. The prime minister is also expected to visit headquarters of the Nokian Tyres factory. Headquartered in Nokia, Finland, the company is the only tyre manufacturer in the world with its own permanent tyre testing facility. Nokian Tires decided to quit Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine while claiming a € 650 million investment in a new car tire factory in Oradea, in north-western Romania.

Education package under debate in Romanian Senate

Romania’s upper house, the Senate, is expected to debate on Thursday a package of laws designed to improve the country’s education system. The move comes under debate in the Senate after Romania’s parliament lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, adopted the package on Wednesday. The projects are expected to promote essential changes in both pre-higher and higher education allowing graduates to reach international standards in the field, as Romania’s Education Minister Ligia Deca said during debates in parliament, quoted by Radio Romania. ”It is a matter of preventing and fighting school dropout and functional illiteracy while implementing an education with focus on child, student or any young person and ensuring the safety of educational institutions, improving the training of teaching staff in compliance with ethics and deontology norms”, Minister Deca said as quoted by Radio Romania.

Romanian prosecutor detained on corruption charges

A former head of the Prosecutor’s Office in Corabia, southern Romania, was detained for 24 hours on Thursday along with a policeman and two other people for their alleged involvement in a corruption case. Prosecutor Sorin Lia is expected to appear before an Appeal Court in the city of Craiova with a proposed arrest warrant of 30 days. Among other claims, Mr. Lia is accused of abuse of office, and forgery. Mr. Lia is also under investigation for his management of classified information in order to protect illegal trade and other crimes carried out by a police officer.
