Separate talks of Romania’s governing PSD and PNL

Leaders of Romania’s governing right-wing National Liberal Party (PNL) and left-wing Social Democrat Party (PSD) are meeting in separate sessions on Tuesday before a change of prime ministers expected by the end of the month. Talks will focus on arrangements concerning the next governing coalition expected to name PSD leader Marcel Coilacu as next prime minister. The governing PNL mentioned some changes in the protocol as all governing parties agreed to allow measures designed to improve proceedings of the next government. Leaders of the governing Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians (UDMR) told reporters that their party had no reasons of concern as an agreement should only involve the governing PNL and PSD.

Romania’s OMV Petrom expected to pay solidarity fee

OMV Petrom will pay an additional fee representing the solidarity contribution, according to a release published on the website of the Bucharest Stock Exchange on Monday. The news come three days after a law published in the country’s Official Gazette was approved by parliament on the matter. The total amount is expected to hit RON 1.5 billion for the fiscal year pf 2022 with payment expected by the end of June 2023. For the first quarter of 2023, the value of the solidarity contribution is estimated at some RON 389 million, which will also be reflected in results of Q2/23. The contribution for the entire year 2023 will be paid at the end of June 2024. Contribution for the first quarter of the year hit RON 380 million while payments for the entire year will be finalised by June 2024. The move on EU level refers to energy companies with exceptional profits during the economic crisis expected to support state efforts to compensate higher prices.

Fewer Romanian ministries?

The National Political Council (CPN) of the governing left-wing Social Democratic Party )PSD) called for a cut in the number of ministries at its meeting on Tuesday, The move would also involve fewer state secreataries and government agencies, PSD chairman Marcel Ciolacu announced in his address at the meeting. Mr. Ciolacu also mentioned PSD priorities in the future. PSD is the largest left-wing political party in Romania. It was founded by Ion Iliescu, first president of a democratic Romania, after the so-called Revolution in 1989. Marcel Ciolacu became president of the party in August 2020.
