Romania’s former SRI chief under enquiry
Virgil Măgureanu, former head of Romania’s Intelligence Service (SRI), has been prosecuted on Wednesday in the case of the so-called Mineriada (miners’ protestst) of June 13 – 15, 1990, for crimes against humanity. The move comes following an order of the Prosecutor’s Military Office to Romania’s Supreme Court. The case is based on facts and evidence provided after June 4, 2021, when the case was sent back to Prosecutor’s Office as judges rejected all evidence put forward by prosecutors. Also involved in the case are Romania’s former President Ion Iliescu, Petre Roman, Romania’s Prime Minister at the time, as well as Gelu Voican Voiculescu, Adrian Sârbu, miners’ leader Miron Cosma, as well as Vasile Dobrinoiu and Petre Peter of the military reserve force.

Crin Antonescu, the presidential candidate of Romania’s PSD, PNL and UDMR governing coalition, attended a meeting of political talks on Wednesday designed to set a future presidential election campaign. Romania’s Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians (UDMR) is also expected to validate Crin Antonescu as cadidate at the country’s presidential elections in May. The National Council of the governing National Liberal Party (PNL) approved the move at its National Council on Sunday when over 600 PNL delegates attended the event. A similar move of Romania’s center-left governing Social Democrat Party (PSD) is expected at the end of the week when a PSD extraordinary congress is scheduled.
Romania’s treasure theft in the Netherlands still under investigation
New information is emerging following the treasure theft of Romanian ancient artefacts last week. Several suspects involved in the operation come from a Dutch north-western region, according to Dutch police. Dozens of Dutch investigators and experts are involved in the case designwd to recover the artifacts and arrest the thieves. Romania’s government is furious after national treasures on the loan to Netherland’s Drents Museum were stolen in a brazen theft over the weekend.
