Romania’s Constitutional Court expected to rule on president’s resignation
Romania’s Constitutional Court is expected to formulate on Tuesday its position after President Klaus Iohannis said he would quit the job on Wednesday, February 12. The Constitutional Court is also expected to order the country’s government and parliament to put forward the name of an official to replace Mr. Iohannis until May, when the next presidential elections are scheduled. A letter on the issue was already sent, according to a statement of Augustin Zegrean, the head of the Constitutional Court. Article 98 in Romania’s Constitution stipulates that an interim presidency could be ensured by the head of the Romanian Senate or the head of parliament’s lower house. Ilie Bolojan, president of the country’s National Liberal Party (PNL), said he would resign as party leader in order to cover the job in a statement last night. Senators are also expected to decide who would replace Mr. Bolojan as leader of the Senate.
Talks between Metrorex and government officials
Trade union leaders of Bucharest’s Underground, Metrorex, are involved in talks with Romanian government’s officials on Tuesday. Talks also include officials of the country’s Finance and Transport Ministries. Both sides are trying to fiind a solution to current labour conflict. Protesters claim that a collective agreement signed later last year was not in place as workers were deprived of a wage increase and other rights. Consequently, the so-called Magistrala 2, linking the north and south of the capital Bucharest, faced problems as fewer trains were on the run.
