Romania’s acting president expected to meet election officials

Romania’s acting President Ilie Bolojan is expected to meet delegates of institutions responsible for organising the next presidential elections in May at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace in the capital Bucharest on Monday. Participants also include Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Home Minister Cătălin Predoiu, along with the acting chief of the country’s Permanent Electoral Authority, Zsombor Vajda. President Bolojan has promissed to do everything in order to ensure” fair and transparent elections allowing Romanians to elect a president according to their will”. Term for submissions of candidacies at the country’s Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) has expired while alleged appeals to Romania’s Constitutional Court could still be submitted until tomorrow, March 18 with competitors to be confirmed on Thursday, March 20.

Police raid in Bucharest

A 28-year old man was detained by police in the capital Bucharest on Sunday for alleged posession of illegal substances. The man was traveling in a taxi, with illegal drugs hidden in envelopes, according to police sources. The envelopes were seized and sealed by the police. Romania’s Directorate for Invastigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) is expected to question the man for further investigation. In Romania, drug laws set no threshold for personal possession as a person may get a prison term from two to five years. However, the alleged defendant may avoid a jail term by agreeing to join an assistance programme.

Gaudeamus Book Fair opening in Craiova

Radio Romania’s Gaudeamus Book Fair will open in the country’s southern city of Craiova in March 19. The fair is expected to close its doors on March 23. The fair at the Marin Sorescu National Theatre is organised by the Gaudeamus team of the Romanian Broadcasting Corporation and Radio Romania Oltenia in Craiova. Matei Vișniec, a well-known Romanian – French playwright, poet and journalist is expected to be the edition’s Honour President. Vișniec is also working as a journalist at Radio France Internationale.
