Exxon Mobile and OMV Petrom start drilling third well in Romania

US Exxon Mobile and Romania’s oil and gas group OMV Petrom were expected to begin drilling a deepwater well, the third of its kind in the country, on Monday. The Pelican South-1 well is located some 155 km offshore in the Romanian sector of the Black Sea in the Neptun Block jointly held by Exxon and Petrom in the area. Exploration work started two years ago when the companies said they discovered natural gas reserves expected to cover the country’s needs for six years.

Businessman Dorin Cocoş brought under warrant to DNA headquarters

An arrest warrant issued on the name of Dorin Cocoş, a former husband of presidential candidate Elena Udrea, brought him to the headquarters of Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in the capital Bucharest on Monday. Mr. Cocoş is under investigation for his alleged involvement in the so-called Microsoft case. DNA prosecutors raided his home two weeks ago in search of evidence. However, no one was found at home as Dorin Cocoş claimed he was in Dubai and promised to return home as soon as possible. Former communications minister Gabriel Sandu, Gheorghe Ştefan alias „Pinalti”, the mayor of Piatra Neamţ in north-eastern Romania, and businessman Nicolae Dumitru Niro, owner of the Red Dragon commercial complex, were also brought under warrant to the DNA headquarters for their alleged involvement in the same file.

Saint Demetrios the New celebrations in Bucharest

Thousands of worshippers attended a mass jointly offered by Jerusalem Patriarch Theophilos III and Patriarch Daniel of the Romanian Orthodox Church along with other 40 priests at the Patriarchal Church in Bucharest on Monday. The mass was celebrating Saint Demetrios the New (Basarabov), the patron saint protecting the capital Bucharest. Born in 1952 as Ilias Giannopoulos, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem is actually styled as Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and all Palestine. He was elected by the Holy Synod of Jerusalem and confirmed by the pan-Orthodox Synod of Constantinople. St. Demetrios Basarabov the New is one of the most memorable representatives of Christian life, and his relics are kept in the Patriarchal Cathedral in Bucharest.

„A Week in the Mountains” programme at its 12th edition

The 12th edition of „A Week un the Mountains” programme is expected to start next week, a joint announcement released by the country’s Federation of Romanian Tourism Employers (FPTR) and the National Association of Travel Agents (ANAT) said on Monday. The programme aimed at promoting mountain tourism at special costs of more than 50 percent lower than prices usually operated during the period is designed to encourage mountain tourism across the country. Children under seven are allowed to stay in their parents’ room at no extra cost.
