Romanian PSD leader to attend a meeting of European Socialists’ Party

The leader of Romania’s ruling Socialist Democrat Party (PSD) will attend a meeting in Berlin, Germany, of the European Socialists’ Party openining on Thursday. Participants are expected to express their support of Romania to the EU’s passport-free Schengen area which is seen as a solidarity sign of EU Social-Democrats with Romanians, according to a EU Socialists’ press release. PSD leader Marcel Ciolacu is expected to attend several meetings with Socialist counterparts such as German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and prime ministers of Finland, Sweden, Portugal and Malta. The passport-free travel area should be extended to include Bulgaria and Romania as soon as possible, MEPs are set to say. EU governments will vote in December on whether to grant Romania and Bulgaria’s accession to the Schengen area after more than ten years of delay.

Romanian Prime Minister to meet managers of Dacia factory

Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă is expected to meet managers of Dacia factory in the southern city of Mioveni on Thursday. Talks will focus on the strategy of the French Renault Group concerning the development of the plant, also including ways of Romanian government’s support of the industry. A press conference was expected during the day at 11:30 (local time). Automobile Dacia S.A. is a Romanian car company established in 1966 as a subsidiary of French car manufacurer Renault. The Dacia manufacturing plant in Mioveni, southern Argeș County, is Europe’s fifth biggest car manufactruring facility by volume producing 584,219 units delivered only in 2016.

Fire in the city of Voluntari

A huge fire was reported in the city of Voluntari, near Romania’s capital Bucharest on Thursday, The smoke from kilometers away was followed by series of explosions, according to a statement of Bucharest Inspectorate for Emergencies. Some 20 special vehicules and 3 ambulances were involved in rescue operations. However, no victims were reported. Romanian firefighters were praised recently in Greece and France for their work.
