Romania’s absorbtion of EU funds at 90 percent between 2014 – 2020, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu says

Romania has reached an absorbtion of 90 percent of its EU funds between 2014 -2020 allowing the country to come fourth among EU nations in this respect, Romanian Prime Minister told a press conference on Tuesday. European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira welcomed the figure during her visit to capital Bucharest. The Romanian Prime Minister and EU commisioner Ferreira hold talks during a Cabinet meeting at Victoria Palace on Tuesday. Along with EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit, Mrs. Ferreira visited Romania on April 3-4, 2023 for the official launch of the national Cohesion Policy Programmes for 2021 – 2027 with Romania expected to receive a total of € 31.5 billion.

Romania’s former PM Florin Cîțu expected to ask his colleagues to remove his immunity as MP

Romania’s former prime minister Florin Cîțu, currently a senator of the right-wing National Liberal Party (PNL), claimed he would ask his PNL colleagues to support the lifting of his parliament immunity. Along with his lawyers, Mr. Cîțu was allowed to examine his file before the Justice Commision in parliament on Monday. The parliament’s upper house is expected to review a request by Romania’s anti-corruption watchdog, the DNA (Anticorruption National Directorate), for the start of investigation of Mr.  Cîțu, accused of complicity to abuse of office in an anti-COVID vaccines case.

Ukraine and Romania, towards a strategic partnership

„From border control and security to infrastructure development and business ties, Kyiv and Bucharest continue their bilateral neighbourly relationship”, according to a report published by Ukrainian analyst Oleksiy Leonov on Monday. Five most promising areas of co-operation between the two countries were identiified: logistics, priority development of Danube clusters, border infrastructure, agriculture, and energy. However, minority rights and language remain a thorn in relations between Ukraine and Romania –  two countries who coukd otherwise form a great partnership in the Black Sea region.
