Second day of a strike in Romania’s education system
Romanian teachers went on strike on Monday demanding higher wages and a clear timeline concerning a pay rise. As protests enterend a second day on Tuesday trade unions warned they were not expected to give up the move until Romanian government would find a solution to end the crisis. However, a new round of talks is not expected too soon as teachers rejected proposals put forward by ministry officials. More than 150,00 teachers went on strike yesterday demanding higher wages at a time when Romania’s governing coalition prepares to replace Prime Minister Nicolae Ciucă, from the center-right National Liberal Party (PNL) with Marcel Ciolacu, leader of the center-left Social Democratic Party (PSD). An emergency order is expected on Tuesday concerning wages of non-teaching staff along with financial bonuses for beginners. A beginner teacher in Romania currently earns some RON 2,400 (around 500 euros) a month, which is below the average salary.
BNR’s ROBOR index in decline
The 3-month ROBOR index of Romania’s National Bank (BNR) went down at a yearly basis at 6.56 percent on Tuesday. A BNR previous meeting put ROBOR at 6.58 percent, according to data put forward by the BNR. The three-month ROBOR hit 3.02 percent early last year before a rise to 7.56 early this year. The six-month ROBOR index for variable interest on mortgage loans remained unchanged at 6.67 percent. IRCC, BNR’s reference index for consumer loans, hit 5.98 percent/year, up from 5.71 percent published three months ago.
