Latest news following recent plane crash in Italy

Eight Romanian citizens are dead following a plane crash on Sunday, according to a statement issued by Romania’s Foreign Ministry on Monday. They were all Romanian citizens, the ministry said. A Romanian billionaire was killed along with his wife, son, and some other people when the plane he was piloting crashed into a building near Milan, Italy. Dan Petrescu, 68, one of the richest men in Romania, was operating a single-engine Pilatus PC-12 that was seen in flames before it slammed into an office building undergoing renovations in San Donato Milanese, a town southeast of Milan, Italian authorities said. The plane crashed shortly after taking off for the Itaiian island on Sardinia. The plane’s black box has been recovered, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported, citing a deputy prosecutor.

Works at a bridge in Cernavodă expected to resume shortly

Romania’s Company of Motorways and National Roads Infrastructure (CNAIR) is expected to resume work at a bridge near the Danube city of Cernavodă on the Sun Motorway (Autostrada Soarelui) to the country’s Black Sea port of Constantza on Monday. Works include some 5 km. of road with drivers expected to drive on a single track. Romania ended 2020 without seeing any major new infrastructure projects completed. Nor are the prospects for 2021 particularily good. Romania currently has just nearly 800 km. of functional motorways, less than two of its neighbours, Bulgaria and Serbia. In the eastern Romanian province of Moldavia there is currently no motorway infrastructure at all.

Romania coronavirus updates

Romania reported 8,292 new cases on Wednesday, with 133 deaths (67 men, 66 women), and another 1,468 under intensive care. In the capital Bucharest, the number of cases hit 2,269, according to data isssued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GCS). With the cases reported, the Romanian capital leads among other regions across the country followed by western county of Timiș with 662 cases, southern county of Ilfov with 541 cases, and the north-eastern county of Iassy with 420 cases.
