A new life for Bucharest’s old North Railway Station

Founded on September 10, 1868 by King Charles (Carol) I of Romania, Bucharest’s largest railway station, known as ‘Gara de Nord’, opened on September 13, 1872. It remains the main railway station in the capital and Romania’s largest. The country’s government is expected to launch the railway’s modernisation plan at its cabinet meeting on Wednesday. It is only the first stage of a Ron 630 million project to be finalised in four years. Also on Thursday, Romania’s eastern Tecuci Belt will open. Trending for more than 10 years, the work has finally been completed. Work evolution: less than 1 kilometer per year.

Romania’s ‘Operation Fireworks’

Over 150 police raids were reported in Romania’s capital Bucharest and other 23 counties across the country on Thursday. Known as ‘Operation Fireworks’, the move focused on people and companies illegaly possesing and selling pyrotechnic articles. Over 100 tons of pyrotechnic materials were seized, according to a statement issued by Romania’s Police General Inspectorate. Prosecutors opened criminal cases against companies and people violating the law. EU’s Pyrotechnic Articles Directive established rules designed to achieve the free movement of pyrotechnic articles while also ensuring a high level of protection of human health and public security. The police operation was launched with support from the country’s Special Operations Directorate.

BNR’s ROBOR index slightly down

Romania’s National Bank (BNR)’s 3-month ROBOR index went down slightly to 7.60 percent from 7.61 previous day, according to data issued by BNR in Wednesday. The ROBOR was only at 3.02 percent at the beginning of the year. ROBOR (Romanian Interbank Offered Rate) is a daily reference rate based on interest rates on which banks offer to lend unsecured funds to other banks in the Romanian interbank market with 3- months tenor. However, the 6-month ROBOR was unchanged at 7.84 while the 12-month ROBOR stood at 8.10 percent.
