UDMR proposal approved

Romania’s Parliament has passed on Wednesday a proposal put forward by the country’s Democratic Union of Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) formerly rejected by parliament committees. The proposal involved Education Ministry funds designed to start initiation and organisation of a programme expected to support learning of Romanian language and literature starting from March 2024. UDMR proposal also involves the adoption of the budget within 30 days. Romania’s Education Ministry is expected to publish a list of educational units included in the programme within 30 days. UDMR believes the measure would encourage students of different languages to learn Romanian with beneficial effects on their integration in Romania.

Timișoara celebrates its 34th anniversary as first Romanian Communism-free city

Further events are expected on Wednesday in the Romanian south-western town of Timișoara to mark 34 years since the town became Romania’s first Communism-free city. Commemorating and anniversary events are expected throughout the day after sirens will sound at noon (12:00, Romanian time) to mark the day when Timșoara became a free city. Former revolutionaries are expected to appear in the balcony of the Opera House to recall moments in December 21, 1989, when more than 100,000 people gathered in Victoria Plaza chanting “Freedom,  Down with Communism!”. Celebrations wil end in the evening with a Rock for Revolution concert.

Romanian borders under scrutiny

Some 7,560 Ukrainians crossed the Romanian border on Tuesday as the number of Romanian and foreign citizens entering the country hit about 163,550 people. Goods of some RON 23,150 were confiscated, according to Romanian border authorities. Also on Tuesday, 19 foreigners were stopped at the border while another 24 Romanians were not allowed to leave the country for various reasons. The Romanian Border Police is part of Romania’s Ministry for Home Affairs (Ministerul de Interne) responsible for border security and passport control at border crossing points, airports, and ports.
