Poland’s president on a visit to Romania

Poland’s President Andrzej Duda is visting Romania on Tuesday for talks with Romanian counterpart Klaus Iohannis at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace in capital Bucharest. The two East-European leaders are expected to hold private talks and a meeting with Romanian and Polish officials on security issues in the region followed by a joint press conference with Romanian and foreign journalists. The visit comes amid growing tensions in Europe and around the world following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. More than three million people have fled Ukraine because ot the Russian invasion, according to UN. Most have gone to neighbouring countries such as Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary and Moldova.

Russia’s TMK-Artrom under scrutiny

The speaker of Romanian Parliament’s lower house called on the government on Tuesday to clarify the situation of TMK-Artrom, a Russian company in Slatina, southern Olt county. Marcel Ciolacu, also the leader of the governing left-wing Social Democrat Party (PSD), believes that an emergency ruling on the matter is also supposed to solve other similar cases. International sanctions against Russia should be a must in order to block the assets of President Vladimir Putin’s oligarchs while also avoinding consequences for Romanian employees, Mr. Ciolacu pointed out. Some 2,500 Romanian employees at TMK-Artrom were left without pay as the Russian billionaire running the group was on the EU list of sanctions following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. TMK – Artrom S.A. is a manufacturer of steel pipes. The company produces high pressure pipes such as hydraulic cylinders, tubes and drill pipes among other products.

Romania coronavirus updates

Romania reported 5,140 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, which is 2,904 cases more than previous day, with 52 deaths (29 men, 23 women), and 2 people under intensive care, one less than cases recorded a day before). In the capital Bucharest, the number of cases hit 1,262, according to data issued by the country’s Strategic Communication Group (GSC). With its 1,262 cases reported, Bucharest still leads among other regions in the country, followed by north-western county of Cluj (463 cases), western county of Timiș (436 cases), and southern county of Ilfov (248 cases).
