National Arrest Warrant for Former Romanian Minister Elena Udrea, who was sentenced to six years in prison

A national arrest warrant was issued for Former Development Minister Elena Udrea, who was sentenced to six year in prison, for corruption in „Bute Gala” case. Her name appears in the list of „Wanted People, on the website of the Romanian Police. The court has already handed to the Police the paperwork regarding Elena Udrea, and an international arrest warrant is due to be issued on her name. On Wednesday, the Romanian Justice Minister Tudorel Toader has said that an extradition procedure from Costa Rica is possible, in order for Mrs. Udrea to serve her sentence, although Romania does not have a bilateral agreement with Costa Rica on this issue with Costa Rica.

Prime Minister Viorica Dancila is on a two-day official visit to Portugal

The Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila has started a two-day official visit to Portugal, where she is due to meet her counterpart Antonio Costa, as well as President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. According to a government statement, the visit is aimed at boosting cooperation between the two states, insisting on economic ties, in order to value the commercial and investment potential, as well as security and defense policies. A special attention will be paid to cooperation in other areas, such as basic research and innovation, public health and medicine and academic cooperation. The agenda also includes European cooperation, in the prospect of Romania’s Presidency of the European Union Council, in the first half of 2019.

The Romanian Constitutional Court has apprised the Venice Commission, complaining of aggressive attacks

The Romanian Constitutional Court (CCR) has on Tuesday apprised the Venice Commission, the General Secretary of the Council of Europe and the President of Conference of European Constitutional Courts, claiming it was the target of aggressive attacks. CCR members say that representatives of public authorities and parliamentary parties have discredited and disrupted the authority of this essential institution of the Romanian state, which is the guarantor of the Constitution supremacy. The Court says in a statement that the compulsoriness of its decisions has been placed under question and there were calls to the public and the President not to respect and enforce its decision related to the dismissal of the Chief Anti-corruption Prosecutor. CCR says that such actions are threatening democracy, the rule of law and the constitutional justice.
