Prime Minister Viorica Dancila laid out the program of Romania’s Presidency of the European Union Council in Parliament

The Romanian Prime Minister Viorica Dancila has presented to Parliament the program of Romania’s Presidency of the European Union Council. Multiple challenges lay ahead and during the six months period Europe will watch Romania „closely”, the head of the government has said. The taking over of the Presidency of the European Union Council is an historic moment that Romania should honor properly and it should not be politicized in any way, Prime Minister Dancila has argued, emphasizing that Romania is a country worthy of leading Europe. Taking into account this stake, there is no room for vanity and personal interests, the Prime Minister believes, and she has called for consensus for this national project. As far as priorities are concerned, they are organized into four pillars: the convergence issue – with themes such as rights, obligations and opportunities for all European citizens – the European Union’s internal security – managing the external borders, preventing cyber attacks – and the free movement inside the EU, as well as the common values, with a focus on solidarity. Viorica Dancila has told lawmakers that Romania will act as a mediator and it intends to get consensus on important issues, although Europe is divided in certain regards and it would not be easy.
