The Secretary-General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Mathias Cormann, will be welcomed on Wednesday at the Cotroceni Palace by President Klaus Iohannis. The Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has officially announced that he is running for the position of NATO Secretary General

President Klaus Iohannis officially announced on Tuesday that he is entering the competition for the position of Secretary General of NATO. Among the arguments, he mentioned a deep understanding of the challenges faced by the Alliance and Romania’s performance within NATO. The launch of his candidacy comes against the backdrop of requests from Eastern European states not to be left on the sidelines when top positions are distributed within the North Atlantic Alliance or the European Union. In a complex security context, Romania has proven to be a pillar of stability in the region, the head of state has said, emphasizing that it is time for Romania to assume even greater responsibility within the Euro-Atlantic leadership structures. It is a legitimate aspiration for a country with a deep understanding of the security situation, unbalanced by the war initiated by Russia against Ukraine, the President stated. He added that NATO needed a renewed perspective on its mission. President Klaus Iohannis thus announced his decision to enter the competition for the position of Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance.
Klaus Iohannis: I take on this candidacy on behalf of Romania, with full responsibility, and this decision is based on Romania’s performance, the experience gained during my two terms as President of Romania, a deep understanding of the challenges faced by NATO, Europe, and especially our region, and my firm commitment to NATO’s fundamental values and objectives.
The counter-candidate to the Romanian President in the race for the leadership of NATO is the incumbent Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, whom the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany have already announced that they will support. For the appointment of the political leader of NATO, unanimity is required from all 32 member states. Romania is represented at a high level within NATO by Mircea Geoană, Deputy Secretary General.

Three trucks loaded with waste from Germany were stopped from entering Romania

Three trucks loaded with various goods brought from Germany, weighing over 30 tons, were stopped from entering the country at the Borş II Border Crossing Point in Bihor County. All three were driven by Romanian citizens and were supposed to transport second-hand furniture and other goods for companies in Romania, according to the documents. However, during the inspection, it was discovered that the trucks were actually loaded with waste. The Territorial Inspectorate of the Border Police in Oradea has reported that the control authorities did not allow these means of transport to enter the Romanian territory.
