Romania faces France in the opening match of Euro 2016

The 2016 UEFA European Championship kicks off tonight at 9 PM (local time) in Paris with the first match in Group A between France and Romania. Prime Minister Dacian Cioloş who is on an official visit to France declared  „it is going to be a nice match, as the Romanian players are motivated”. Dacian Cioloş was received today by French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and signed a new road map of the bilateral strategic partnership between Romania and France. Romania’s PM will also meet with the French President François Hollande whom he will later accompany from Elysee Palace to Stade de France, to attend the Euro 2016 inaugural match, RADIO ROMANIA reported.

Unprecedented security measures have been implemented in the French cities. Vice-Mayor Jean-Francois Martin has stated for the BBC that the city is well prepared for the tournement: „We have the necessary knowledge to host such a major event and we have been preparing for Euro 2016 for 4 years thanks to cooperation between all intelligence services in Europe”.

Russia reacts to presence of USS Porter destroyer in the Black Sea amid Romanian-US naval exercises

The Romanian Navy and The United States Navy will conduct common exercises in the Black Sea, June 13 to June 17,  as rehearsal of standard procedures meant to develop interoperability between naval forces of the two countries. The Russian Federation reacted by one of its Foreign Ministry’s officials today to the presence of USS Porter, a US Navy destroyer, in the Black Sea, stating that Moscow does not agree with its presence and it is going to take action, according to Reuters. The Russian official also criticised the presence of two US aircraft carriers in the Mediterranean ahead the NATO Summit in Warsaw, RADIO ROMANIA reported.

Central Electoral Bureau announced final results of local elections

Romania’s Central Electoral Bureau has announced tonight the final results of the local elections, after counting the votes in all polling stations. No appeal for annulment of elections or vote recounting has been accepted.
The total number of 3.184 mandates for mayor positions nationwide have been distributed as follows between the parties: Social Democratic Party – 1677; National Liberal Party – 1081; Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania – 195; Alliance of Liberals and Democrats  – 64; independent candidates – 53, RADIO ROMANIA reports.

Traffic on national road resumed following standstill caused by powerful blast

Traffic on national road DN2 (European 85) was resumed earlier this evening after a standstill caused by the explosion of a truck loaded with 800 gas bottles in Mihailesti, Buzau County. No victims or injuries have been registered during the incident this morning, but the reported damages are pretty significant. Some gas bottles have been projected by the explosion through the roofs of nearby houses while an area of 100 meters encompassing the truck has been scorched, RADIO ROMANIA reported.
