Romania would have a real chance to gain an important position at an European level if president Klaus Iohannis took leadership of the European Council, says Prime minister Marcel Ciolacu. He spoke about the idea of President Klaus Iohannis leaving Cotroceni early, to take the leadership of the European Council, after the eventual resignation of the current president, Charles Michel. The prime minister also said that he often talks to the president, including on this matter. According to a recently circulated scenario, President Klaus Iohannis would have a real chance to take the high European position, as leaders of members states tried to avoid Viktor Orban taking the position. In case Klaus Iohannis leaves the presidential position before the end of his mandate, according to the Constitution, PNL leader Nicolae Ciucă, the president of the Senate, would be the one temporarily taking the role of chief of state.

According to Eurostat, Romania has some of the smallest housing price rises

In the European Union, accommodation has become more expensive last year, after, in 2022, prices saw a decrease. Rents, however, have grown constantly in the last 14 years. According to the most recent data from Eurostat, Romania has some of the smallest housing price rises.
During the last ten years, the price for housing in the block has risen by 48%, while rents have risen by 22%. The price rise for housing varied in some periods, while the rent prices has risen constantly. As opposed to the buying price for housing, rents were not influenced by the pandemic or the energetic crisis. Housing prices have risen in Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Austria, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg. In these countries prices have more than doubled, triple folding in Estonia. At the opposite end, in Greece, Italy and Cyprus, prices have lowered by 14-2%. The highest rent price rises in the last 14 years were seen in Estonia, where they are three times as high. In Romania, the rent prices have risen more than the price to buy a home, a situation met in just five other states. On the other hand, Romania has some of the smallest rises of prices: for buying a home a 25% increase, for rent an approximate 40% increase in 14 years.

Maia Sandu, president of the Republic of Moldova, visits Romania

The president of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, is visiting Romania, where, tomorrow, she will receive the prize „Timişoara for European Values”. The prize, amounting to 30.000 euro, honors prominent personalities known internationally for their fight for European values. Today, Maia Sandu will meet, in Timişoara, members of the Moldavian community in the city, and will talk about issues concerning the future of young Moldavian students studying in Banat. Tomorrow, Maia Sandu will arrive at the Săvârşin Castle, where she will be welcomed by her majesty Margareta, guardian of the Romanian Crown.
